The Fruit Harvest Helper was developed by NNUs Robotics Vision Lab with the idea of eventually aiding in the fruit yield estimation tasks that farmers undertake every year. This tool enables farmers or individuals to estimate the number of apples on a Pink Lady apple tree by either taking a photo of the tree or selecting an existing image. Once an apple tree image is chosen, apple clusters are detected using a color-based algorithm, and the number of detected clusters is reported on the screen. While the app is not yet functional for practical use, the correlation between detected and actual apples on a tree could potentially provide farmers with an estimate of the apple yield. Currently, farmers have to manually count the number of Pink Lady apples on their trees to estimate fruit yield, so this app could significantly simplify the process. For best results, images of Pink Lady apple trees should be taken from approximately 8-10 feet away. In the future, the app might be used practically, but further research by the Robotics Vision Lab would be needed.
